The Producer's Guitar-PRS SE Custom 24

Being a music producer, knowing how to play an instrument becomes imperative. Knowing how to play the guitar makes your job as a producer that much easier! I mean, how many songs on the radio today dosen't have a guitar part? Not a lot.

So getting your chops up on an acoustic and on an electric guitar will set you apart from the rest of the crowd!

So now that you want a good guitar, there are tons and I mean tons on options out there! From the pointy metal guitars of Ibanez RG series to the classic Fender Strats (Mexican Strats i.e) and I am coming for a budget perspective. If you have the money, go ahead and get a custom shop guitar. They are amazing! This is more oriented towards the budget side.

So what should a producer's guitar have to be called as a "Producer's Guitar".

It should be versatile. Very VERY important. As your career as a producer develops, you'll have to write music in a lot of different genres, and a guitar that can do all of them and do them well is what you're looking for.

Versatility in a guitar comes from how different it can sound with all the different pick up configurations. For rock, you need a classic Lespaul style humbuckers. For Funk/ Blues and anything mellow, you need a single coil tone of a strat.

These two can be called your "bread and butter" tones. Most music out there are made by guitars mostly fitted with these two types of pickups.

A lot of top tier producers have both a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender Stratocaster and have many options to choose from. As professional as that may sound, you don't need that. A decent below $1000 guitar will serve you well!

So why the PRS SE Custom 24 then?

If you've heard of PRS guitars then you know what "PRS" stands for. The Legendary Paul Reed Smith is the man behind the design of the guitars this company makes and his main aim with the Custom 24 line was to be a guitar that could do both. Exactly what we as producers are looking for! I mean, its literally the prefect blend of the two guitars. From the scale length to the pick up design, but these guitars are monsters in their own right!

So lets get down to specs now shall we?

The PRS SE Custom 24 are an affordable line of the original Custom 24 models. With a 25" scale length, its exactly between a strat and a lespaul with 25.5" and 24.75" scale length respectively.

The pickups on these are the 85/15 "S" pickups, a slightly inexpensive versions of the standard 85/15 hand-wound pickups in the core line guitars. These are humbucking pickups and comes with a coil split and man are these the best split coil tone I've heard! The high end sheen on these guitars and the "twangy" single coil "strat" like tones are amazing on these! So for your next funk song you can just kill it with some Nile Rodgers style strumming on these bad boys!

The clean tones on these guitars are just amazing and technically speaking, they sit very well in a mix context. The controlled low end and upper mids on these are just smooth!

If you have a rock project and have a client ask you an AlterBridge type sound. Well you have the same guitar as Miles and Mark also uses a signature guitar from PRS. I mean that says enough about their proficiency in delivering a killer hard rock guitar tone.

So considering all these points and doing about a years worth of research as to where i should put the money, I'd say the PRS SE Custom 24 guitars are the best guitars for the price and also for our unique needs as music producers.

Check out PRS's website for more! Thanks for reading this and I hope I could help you deciding your next guitar. We producers never really have enough gear to make music now do we!

Will see you in the next one! Cheers and make amazing music!

Peace.
